Aki BBQ

Today, for the second day spring camp, we set out into Hachioji, to have an epic barbecue by Aki River. We came prepared with a bunch of ingredients and kitchen tools to allow the scouts to cook their own tasty food.

Once we arrived, the scouts took their things out of the van and got organized while Mark unloaded the trunk. We then walked over to the river together, where we eventually got set up.

Today's two activities were quite complex, so we split the scouts up into two groups to simplify things. One group would explore to find kindling/firewood, then work on fire starting (led by Dylan), while the other group would prepare their flatbread dough and stir-fry ingredients (led by Mark). Each group would have a go at both activities in the end.

The fire activity started with the collection of fuel for the fire. Dylan explained the basics of what to collect, how, and why before going out to look for it. After the scouts collected enough, they came back to start practicing with their Ferro Rods.

Dylan taught them the correct technique, and they took turns striking into the air, before attempting to light the tinder bundles. Only Kevin was able to light a fire on his own today, however, starting a fire using this method takes a great deal of practice, a good amount of strength, and even some luck. So, we encouraged the scouts to keep trying again next time and not give up!

Additionally, the scouts helped to feed and grow the fire in the grill once it was lit, getting it ready for the barbecue.

The cooking activity started with Mark explaining the food they'd be preparing, showing them the ingredients and tools they'd be using to do so. The scouts measured and mixed their flatbreads together, before rolling them out to be ready for grilling. They also cut the vegetables, and seasoned/mixed the stir fry together.

Mark made sure to explain and guide each scout when cutting to make sure no one got hurt. He taught them how to grip the knife and the food being sliced. The younger scouts, who weren't as confident with the knives, were given scissors to cut the vegetables.

Once both groups had finished their activities, they came together to start barbecuing the food! Each scout waited patiently for their flatbreads to be ready. Eventually everything was done, and the scouts were sitting together, enjoying tasty meals that were their very own.

As the scouts finished up, they played for the remainder of the time we had. They drew on their sketch pads, tossed rocks into the water, built miniature dams at the water and tall rock towers. We even had a boat race with all the scouts’ chosen sticks and leaves.

However, soon it was time to leave, so the scouts got all packed up, and walked back to the van.

Today was a lot of fun, and very satisfying for everyone at the end of all our hard work. We look forward to seeing everyone again for another event soon!
