The day began with clear skies and happy faces, everyone looking forward to the activities ahead. We dropped off our things at ABC International School to lessen the scouts' loads during the long urban hike ahead. Once they grabbed their water bottles and jackets, we were off!
First, we discussed some rules regarding safety around cars and streets, pairing up the scouts to keep things organized. We walked for 3 kilometers before reaching the art museum, stopping at a few parks along the way to rest and play. We didn't have much time at the Matsuoka Museum of Art, as our pottery class was due soon, however we still enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. We saw various great statues from Rome, Greece, Cambodia, and the Tang dynasty of China. Some of our scouts took photos before we had to leave. We will be sure to visit again at some point, as we weren't able to see even half of the collection in its entirety.
After a short walk, we reached the Shirokane Ceramics Art School for our pottery class. The instructor was able to speak English to all our scouts as she helped them shape their chosen projects. The younger scouts, or scouts who were there for the first time, made plates. While Logan, who was more experienced and feeling up for the challenge, made a cup. The scouts first chose their type of pottery (as mentioned), then chose the shape with stencils. They rolled out the clay, placed the stencil down, traced and then cut out the shape. Then they labeled them, and stamped on designs until their creations were complete. We washed hands and said our thanks and goodbyes before leaving off to lunch.
We made our way back the same way we came, and eventually got back to ABC for some deserved lunch and rest. The scouts were super hungry and very happy to be sitting down and relaxing. As the scouts finished their food they drew and colored pictures on their notebooks to pass the time. As we were all done with our lunches, we headed out to the JetSet Bouldering Gym in Kunitachi for some climbing action! We talked along the way, playing counting games and even quizzing each other with math questions.
When we arrived, some of the scouts were unsure if they wanted to go bouldering or not, as they were tired out by the long urban hike and drive. In the end, three stayed for climbing while two decided to go out with Dylan, to explore the nearby river path and park. Some climbers triumphed over fear and inexperience, while others continuously challenged themselves to improve. Overall, it was a victorious effort for all three of them.
The scouts with Dylan enjoyed and learnt about the beautiful nature along the path, finding interesting plants, trees, and bugs both there and back. They also got to spend some time at the park, where they balanced on rocking cars, slid down the slide, and played lots of other silly games. Once we had all gathered back at the parking lot, the two scouts that chose not to climb weren't sure that they made the right choice. No one was sad or disappointed, but nonetheless we had a quick discussion on the importance of seizing the moment, taking opportunities when they might not arise again, and persisting despite being tired. Soon after we were back on the road, with most of the scouts passed out asleep from the long and tiring day.
We really enjoyed this final day of Winter camp, and we look forward to seeing all of you again for spring camp!
