Our day began with a fun car ride to Fudoji Temple. On the way the scouts and I caught up on happenings at school (accidents, teacher problems, times they got in trouble) and they wanted to hear what happened with Michelle. I told them the story of her accident and the different things we all learned about how to be more careful in the future. It ended with a clear reminder to look at what you could do differently after an accident or a problem you’ve had and to do our best to learn from all things we experience. Later on we were able to FaceTime with Michelle and Dylan and the scouts all agreed and told Michelle that she was very brave. We appreciated all their questions into the accident and it makes us feel like family. After arriving we introduced our newest club member Max, Scout Leader Fiona, and Head Scout Aich.
The temple grounds were opened just as we arrived and we headed through the gates to the first burial mausoleum.

At over 400 years old it was difficult to wrap our heads around. We talked about how it has had repairs over the years but it’s the quality of design and the materials used, that has really helped to keep it standing for so long.
After strolling about we came across the small Jizo statue. After explaining that Jizo is a deity who’s job it is to protect children and travelers many of the the Scouts wanted to put a coin in the space below the Jizo. Luckily I had several 5 and 1¥ coins and we placed them at the base.

After this we made our way out and stopped for a quick snack. After heading off again we passed a wall which right away some of the Scouts asked to climb. With a little bit of guidance and help most made it up and over.

After climbing for about 15 minutes we continued onwards to visit Yamaguchi Kannon Kinjoin. The beautiful grounds and huge stones with swirling layers stood out to the scouts. We answered questions about various things such as “what are the bells for”, ”how and why do you pray here”, ”why is there a horse temple”, etc. with most answers ending with the conclusion that we are all different and do, think, and feel different.

We moved on to the Okunoin Gojunoto Pagoda, some scouts noticed the similarities with the mausoleums we had seen earlier. Ben and Claire then told us they had been there before to take photos in their kimono and we all agreed it would be a good spot to take photos in.

Soon after, we had a toilet break before heading to the obstacle course. All the scouts changed cars and we headed out. After arriving we hiked into the hills till we found a quiet spot to have our lunch. With the sun coming through the trees we enjoyed the beautiful fall colors the sound of rustling leaves.

When we had finished and cleaned up we headed into the obstacle course and did that non-stop for a couple hours. Everyone took on the challenges and overcame some self doubt when it seemed too difficult.

Soon our time in the hills was coming to an end. Before heading home we walked to the Onsen and bought an ice cream each from the 17ice vending machine.

Before heading back to the station we took one photo with our masks off. It was nice to breathe freely.

With the scouts exhausted most slept on the way to the drop off point. And we said our goodbyes. It really was a lovely day and I’m thankful and honored to have this time together. I hope to see you again soon. Thank you for coming.
