Urban Hike, Pottery and Bouldering

We switched things up today with an urban hike, stopping for a pottery class on the way, and ending the day with a bit of bouldering.

As each of the scouts arrived, we introduced ourselves and packed away our bags, getting ready for the long walk ahead. We first talked about road safety, and made pairs with older and younger scouts together.

A while after beginning, we reached the Institute for Nature Study in central Tokyo, a place preserving the ecosystem that once ruled over all of Tokyo. The scouts got to explore, getting to see examples of flora and fauna as we walked along. The nature was beautiful in both looks and sounds, as birds chirped cheerfully throughout the path. However, lovely as it was, we needed to get to our next destination on time. The hike was 2.85 kilometers both ways, and so after a tiring up and down journey, we were very happy to be stopping at Shirokane Art School for a pottery class!

The scouts got their aprons on and sat down excitedly. Our teacher for the class showed the scouts examples of the types of plates they could make, and set them up with a cloth, some tools, and clay. They showed the scouts how to roll out their clay evenly, and with some help all the scouts were able to get it done.

Next, it was time to choose our shapes. The teacher showed us all the different stencils the scouts could use, and soon, the plates were cut out into fish, stars, and even Pikachus. The scouts also got to use plenty of stamps, rollers, and other tools to further design their pottery.

As the scouts finished up, they then had to smooth out the rough edges with damp sponges, finally completing their creations. After choosing a color for their glaze (black or white), it was time to clean up and say our goodbyes.

The way back felt longer, but in the end we made it. We ate lunch and rested happily, talking about what was coming up next. After cleaning up, we got back into the car, for a short drive to JetSet Climbing Gym, for some indoor bouldering. A few naps later, and the gym was just outside.

We greeted the kind owners and got geared up for some real climbing action. All the scouts were able to complete routes at their different levels, and the owners helped them improve and reach new heights. The scouts learned to take breaks and be patient, but when the time was right, stay focused and brave. Time flew by, and after some snack, and a bit more climbing, we had to start packing up. We all said our thanks to the friendly, helpful staff and owners for their hospitality.

Back in the car, we rested and played games, arriving at pick-up not long after. Today was great, it presented many interesting challenges, both physical and mental, for our courageous scouts. I hope they all enjoyed it as much as we did, and we look forward to seeing you all soon!
